Teacher support and recognition are a large part of this mission. To that end, NHCSS has established the annual Teacher of the Year Award.
Nominations for the NHCSS Teacher of the Year are sought in the fall and winter. The deadline for nominations is March 15 of each year. The NHCSS Teacher of the Year will be honored at the New Hampshire "Excellence in Education Program" (known as the "EDies") in June and will have a table for them and their family at the event. In addition, the recipient will be awarded a year's membership in NHCSS, will be recognized at the NHCSS Annual Conference in the fall, and will receive a cash award. Gwen Beane Mini-Grant: $1,000
The purpose of the Gwen Beane Mini-Grant is to promote excellence in the field of Social Studies by encouraging classroom projects and improve or expand students’ understanding of the past, the present, and what the future might hold. Projects supported by the Gwen Beane Mini-Grant should compliment the current New Hampshire State Frameworks and National Standards in Social Studies.
Eligible applicants include individual teachers or teams of teachers who are members of the NHCSS. They may submit one proposal per year.
Gwen Beane was an officer and Executive Board member of NHCSS for more than 25 years. She served as Social Studies chair and teacher at Pinkerton Academy. The Gwen Beane Mini-Grant was established in her honor when she retired from the NHCSS Executive Board.
The value of the Gwen Beane Mini-Grant is a maximum of $1000. Proposals must be received by April 1 of each year. Proposals will then be considered by the Awards Committee, made up of members of the NHCSS Executive Board, and discussed by the NHCSS Executive Board as a whole at the April board meeting. Incomplete applications and those received after the deadline will not be considered. Recipients of this award will be notified by end of June. Activities such as professional development programs, institutes, courses, or materials purchased for daily classroom use will not be considered. Although large equipment purchases such as computers and scanners cannot generally be supported, computer software related to a specific project is an allowable request. Members of the NHCSS Executive Board are not eligible for the Gwen Beane Mini-Grant.

A final report for your project must be submitted within one year of the completion of the project. A final report must include: a 2 to 3 page report describing how the project was conducted and executed; and an itemized budget enumerating how the funding was actually spent by the grant recipient(s). Grant recipients are also required to choose one of the following to report on their projects:

- A proposal approximately 2 to 3 pages, describing the purpose and objectives of the project, a description of the project, a time line for the project, and a description of how the project will be assessed
- An itemized budget indicating what the money will be spent on, and estimate how much money will be spent on each item, etc.
- A letter of support from your building principal or immediate supervisor.
- And any supporting evidence of the nomination (maximum 10 pages)

The New Hampshire Council for the Social Studies entertains requests for funding from nonprofit organizations sponsoring projects and programs that fit in with the NHCSS’s mission statement. Should individual teachers seek funding from the NHCSS for programs or classroom initiatives, they should submit a Gwen Beane Mini-Grant application (see above).

Kristi Alvarez Geospatial Educator Memorial Award
Past president of the National Council for Geographic Education and NHCSS, was committed to Geographic and Geospatial Education for over 30 years. Alvarez started teaching at Keene State College in the fall of 1999, earning a reputation as an excellent geography teacher and a leader in social science education, committed to broadening the geography education experience for students. She was also recognized for her integrity, work ethic, and indomitable spirit.
To continue the spirit of Kristi's work with hundreds of educators across the United States, the award will be granted annually to a geospatial educator of any grade making a difference in geospatial education. The deadline for nominations is January 15 of each year.
